    Overview

A customer platform that brings marketing, sales, customer service, content, and operations together around one shared contact database. It started in 2006, built by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah at MIT, and the company is now public. The core CRM is free, and paid products called Hubs add features on top: Marketing Hub for email and campaigns, Sales Hub for pipeline and outreach, Service Hub for support, Content Hub for the website, and Operations Hub for data syncing. An AI layer called Breeze runs across all of them. HubSpot is aimed mainly at small and mid-sized companies that want one system instead of several.

    What people use it for

Companies use HubSpot as their CRM: one place to store contacts, track deals through a pipeline, log emails and calls, and set follow-up tasks. Marketing teams build and send email campaigns, create landing pages and forms, run automated nurture sequences, and report on which channels bring in leads. Sales teams use it for email templates, meeting scheduling links, automated outreach sequences, and lead scoring. Support teams run a ticket queue, a knowledge base, and a shared inbox through Service Hub. Operations teams use it to sync HubSpot with other systems and clean data automatically. Smaller businesses often adopt the free CRM first and add paid Hubs as they grow. Agencies build client sites on Content Hub and manage campaigns from the same account.

    Key capabilities

The free CRM holds contacts, companies, deals, and tasks with no seat cost, and includes email tracking, meeting links, and live chat. Marketing Hub adds email marketing, landing pages, forms, blog and SEO tools, ad management, and an automation builder driven by triggers like a form submission or a page view. Sales Hub adds sequences, quotes, a product library, call recording, forecasting, and predictive lead scoring on higher tiers. Service Hub covers tickets, a customer portal, a knowledge base, and surveys. Content Hub runs a full CMS with hosting. Breeze provides AI agents and assistants for drafting content, prospect research, and answering customer questions. The App Marketplace connects HubSpot to tools such as Gmail, Salesforce, Slack, Zoom, and Google Ads. Marketing Hub is priced by the number of marketing contacts you store, while Sales and Service seats are priced per user. Each Hub sells in Starter, Professional, and Enterprise tiers, and the Professional and Enterprise levels carry a one-time onboarding fee.

    Limitations

The jump from Starter to Professional is large, and Professional and Enterprise add a mandatory onboarding fee on top. Advanced automation, custom objects, and detailed reporting sit behind the higher tiers, so growing teams often need features before they can justify the price. Marketing Hub's pricing is based on stored marketing contacts, and the bill can rise mid-contract when the count crosses a tier. Contacts that have unsubscribed still count unless you actively exclude them. Public reviews also note that leaving HubSpot is real work, since data, workflows, and templates are all tied to the platform. Trustpilot scores skew low, mostly over billing and cancellation.

    Insight

HubSpot's real strength is that everything shares one contact record, so marketing, sales, and support see the same history without stitching tools together. That is worth a lot to a team that would otherwise run three disconnected systems. The trap is cost growth. The free CRM and Starter tier are genuinely useful, but the features most teams eventually want, real automation, custom objects, good reporting, live only in Professional and Enterprise, and the price step between them is steep. Marketing Hub's contact-based pricing needs active list cleanup or the bill climbs on its own. Go in with a clear view of which Hub you actually need and at which tier, and keep your contact count clean from day one. It is a strong platform to grow into, but an expensive one to grow into blindly.
