Overview
A chat assistant made by Anthropic, a United States artificial intelligence company founded in 2021 by a group that had worked at OpenAI. You type a request in plain words and Claude writes back. It can also search the web, read files you upload, and work through long documents in one pass. It is best known for careful writing and for coding help. You can use Claude in a web browser, on iPhone and Android, and in a desktop app for Mac and Windows. There is also Claude Code, a version for programmers that runs inside a terminal and edits project files directly. Anthropic sells Claude to individuals, teams, and large companies.
What people use it for
Writing and editing come first. People draft reports, articles, emails, and marketing copy, then ask Claude to fix the tone or cut the length. The output tends to sound like a person wrote it. Reading long material is the second big use. You can paste or upload contracts, research papers, board decks, or call transcripts and ask for a summary or for specific answers. Coding is the third. Developers use it to write new code, explain code they inherited, hunt for bugs, and with Claude Code, make changes across a whole project from the command line. File analysis is common too. Claude reads spreadsheets, PDFs, and images, pulls out numbers, and can build a chart or a short document from what it finds. Teams also set up a Project: a shared space with standing instructions and reference files, so every new chat starts with the same background.
Key capabilities
Recent Claude models carry a context window of up to 1 million tokens, which is several hundred thousand words in one conversation. Older models sit at 200,000 tokens. The large window is open to paid subscribers at no extra charge, and a single request to those models can include up to 600 images or PDF pages. The free plan already includes web search, a memory that carries facts between chats, and file creation. Generated documents, code, web pages, diagrams, and small interactive apps appear in a side panel called Artifacts, which you can edit in place, roll back to earlier versions, and publish as a shareable link. Skills let Claude follow packaged instructions for set tasks, with built-in ones for Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and PDF files. A connector directory holds hundreds of integrations, so Claude can work inside apps like Slack, Notion, Linear, and Stripe. Paid individual plans add Claude Code, unlimited Projects, deeper research runs, and a Microsoft 365 link. Team plans add central administration and single sign-on and by default keep customer content out of model training. Enterprise adds user provisioning, audit logs, and compliance controls.
Limitations
Heavy users run into caps. Pro and Max subscribers have reported burning through weekly usage limits in a day or two, sometimes with no warning, and the app does not say which limit was hit. Limits also tighten during busy hours. For steady all-day coding work, the cheaper plans are often not enough. Claude has fewer built-in extras than ChatGPT. It does not generate images or video of its own. It also hedges and refuses more than rival assistants on borderline requests, which is cautious but can slow you down. The heaviest usage plan sits well above the price of a standard assistant subscription. Deeper admin features such as user provisioning and audit logs are reserved for the Enterprise plan.
Insight
The reason to reach for Claude is writing quality and stamina with long inputs. Give it a 200 page document and a specific question and it stays accurate deep into the text, where other tools start to drift. Its drafts also need less rewriting, because the tone lands closer to how a person actually talks. The friction is real. It says no, or adds a disclaimer, on requests that are clearly fine, and there is no quick way to turn that down. The usage caps bite if you lean on it all day, and the fix is a more expensive plan. Projects are worth setting up early: drop in a style guide and a few sample documents and the tone stays consistent without pasting context into every chat. A practical pattern is to use Claude for the writing, editing, and document-heavy work, and keep a second assistant around for image generation and quick throwaway questions where its caution is not worth the wait.
