    Overview

A chat assistant from OpenAI, an American AI company. It launched in November 2022 and grew faster than almost any consumer product before it. You type a question or a task in plain words and it writes back. It can also search the web, look at images and files you upload, run code, and speak out loud. It runs in a web browser, on iPhone and Android, and in desktop apps for Mac and Windows. OpenAI sells it to individuals, teams, and large companies, and also offers the underlying models to developers through a separate paid API.

    What people use it for

Writing is the most common use. People draft emails, reports, posts, and marketing copy, then ask for a shorter or clearer version. Second is quick research and explanation: asking how something works, comparing options, or turning a messy set of notes into a summary. Third is coding help: writing small scripts, explaining error messages, and fixing bugs. Data work is common too. You can upload a spreadsheet or PDF and ask for totals, charts, or a plain summary of what it shows. People use voice mode to talk through ideas hands free while walking or driving. Teams set up custom GPTs and Projects: a saved space with standing instructions and reference files so every new chat starts with the same background. Students and professionals also use it as a study partner and a first draft machine for slides and documents.

    Key capabilities

ChatGPT includes web search, image generation, file uploads, and a data analysis tool that runs Python to work through spreadsheets and produce charts. Advanced Voice Mode holds a spoken back and forth conversation. Deep Research runs a longer multi step search and returns a report with citations. ChatGPT agent carries out multi step tasks in a controlled browser, such as filling forms or gathering information across sites. Canvas opens a side panel for editing long documents and code in place. Memory carries facts between chats. Custom GPTs let anyone build a task specific version with its own instructions and files, shared through the GPT Store. Projects group related chats with shared files. Connectors link ChatGPT to tools like Google Drive and GitHub so it can pull in context. Plans run from a free tier through Go, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, with higher tiers giving more messages, larger context, and admin controls. OpenAI reported more than 800 million weekly users in late 2025. Sora, its video generation product, is sold separately.

    Limitations

Heavy users hit caps. Plus subscribers have both a weekly quota and a rolling limit measured over a few hours, and reviewers report being cut off mid task even with allowance left for the week. Only the higher priced Pro plans avoid the shorter window. It still makes confident mistakes, so output needs checking, especially numbers, citations, and code. The free tier uses smaller models and tighter limits. Advanced features like agent and Deep Research have their own separate usage limits. Model behavior changes as OpenAI swaps versions, and some users say answers feel different from week to week. Admin controls such as single sign on and audit logs are Enterprise only.

    Insight

ChatGPT is the safe default. It does more things in one place than any rival assistant: search, images, voice, code, file analysis, and agents, and most people can get useful work out of it within minutes. That breadth is also the reason to keep expectations in check. It is a strong generalist, not a specialist, so for careful long form writing or deep document analysis some people still prefer Claude, and for sourced research Perplexity shows its work more clearly. The usage limits on the Plus plan are the common complaint, and the fix is a much more expensive plan. Custom GPTs and Projects are worth setting up early if the same context comes up again and again, because they save re explaining the background every time. Treat its output as a fast first draft that a person then checks, not as a finished answer.
